Working with Basic Needs UK in Kenya, we participate in regular mental health clinics in Nairobi and its environs. The picture on the right shows a recent mental health clinic at Jamhuri Showground for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), in Nairobi. On the left, USP-K officials visiting Kirathimo camp for IDPs in Limuru area outside Nairobi. Cases of mental illness among IDPs are higher than among the general population as a result of the difficulties they have experienced. Other pictures show USP-K members engaging in mental health education. |

Current activities include development of the secretariat, strengthening of membership and development of organization and funding strategy. The organization is also working for advancement of rights of users and survivors of psychiatry through various lobbying and advocacy initiatives targeting government, the medical fraternity, and other service providers. We are also supporting local user/survivor groups by training members, strengthening national networks, holding local advocacy and education events.
We have groups in informal settlements of Kibera, Kangemi and Kawangware and the environs surrounding Nairobi. Activities include mobilizing groups, facilitating free mental health clinics in conjunction with Basic Needs UK in Kenya. We are also working at establishing an endowment fund to give loans to members (credit facilities are difficult to come by for mentally ill persons (MIPs).
